{"id":362811,"date":"2025-10-29T23:20:29","date_gmt":"2025-10-29T17:50:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.technologyforyou.org\/?p=362811"},"modified":"2025-10-29T23:20:29","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T17:50:29","slug":"new-gsma-report-shows-more-than-half-of-indians-have-been-scammed-with-14-reporting-financial-loss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.technologyforyou.org\/new-gsma-report-shows-more-than-half-of-indians-have-been-scammed-with-14-reporting-financial-loss\/","title":{"rendered":"New GSMA report shows\u00a0more than half\u00a0of\u00a0Indian\u2019s have been\u00a0scammed, with\u00a014%\u00a0reporting\u00a0financial loss"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"post_title\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Indian Mobile Operators\u00a0Help Online Businesses Combat Scams and Identity Theft Through\u00a0New\u202fFederated\u202fNetwork Services,\u00a0Supported\u00a0by\u00a0GSMA Open Gateway\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>India\u2019s three largest mobile network operators \u2013 Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea \u2013 today provided an update on how they are further strengthening their efforts to tackle digital scams, through the\u00a0GSMA Open Gateway initiative.<\/p>\n<p>While the three operators are running a series of individual programmes to help keep their customers safe from scams, today they outlined how they are also working together as a mobile ecosystem, through the GSMA Open Gateway initiative, to provide banks and other online platforms with new, federated ways to verify customer identities and combat digital fraud.<\/p>\n<p>The updates come as the GSMA published new research at India Mobile Congress showing that digital scams are an escalating concern for consumers across India, with more than half of Indian consumers (53%) having been scammed, with 10% having fallen victim in the past year. The GSMA commissioned\u00a0<strong>\u201cIndia Consumer Scam Report 2025\u201d,<\/strong> authored by advisory firm Armidale, shows that growth in digital scams and fraud is eroding digital trust.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Indian Operators Provide GSMA Open Gateway Update at India Mobile Congress<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Speaking at India Mobile Congress 2025,\u00a0the operators outlined plans to provide enterprise developers at banks and online retailers with federated access to new services including the SIM Swap and Number Verification APIs (Application Programmable Interface).\u00a0Federated CAMARA\u00a0APIs, certified by the GSMA, help developers\u00a0build\u00a0services that work with\u00a0every participating mobile network, while\u00a0allowing\u00a0each operator\u00a0to\u00a0keep control of its data,\u00a0policy\u00a0and revenue.\u00a0The software provides an interface,\u00a0interoperability\u00a0and global cross-country coverage,\u00a0so digital enterprises can easily and securely connect their services to the rich, intelligent functionality that mobile operator networks can provide.<\/p>\n<p>Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea have already launched the SIM Swap API, which help banks prevent account takeover attacks, where fraudsters use social engineering techniques and stolen personal data to take control of the account owner\u2019s SIM card.<\/p>\n<p>All three operators also plan to launch a CAMARA-based Number Verification API before the end of 2025. This API is a\u00a0more secure\u00a0replacement for SMS One-Time Passwords (OTPs). It allows businesses to\u00a0verify a mobile user\u2019s identity by matching their phone number against real-time network data to protect\u00a0Indians\u00a0against digital scams, simultaneously ensuring a seamless customer experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GSMA Launches India Consumer Scam Survey<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The GSMA commissioned\u00a0\u201cIndia Consumer Scam Report 2025\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0published today, also highlights why the mobile industry is looking to work more closely with financial services and online retail firms to tackle scams and fraud by building new innovative services.<\/p>\n<p>The report found widespread concerns over scams, as well as significant financial and emotional impact on victims. It revealed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Victimisation<\/strong>: 10% percent of respondents were scammed in the past year;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Financial harm<\/strong>: 14% of victims lost material sums that still trouble them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Digital trust<\/strong>: 58% of Indian consumers said they are \u201cvery\u00a0worried\u201d about scams, with 84% believing they are increasing. Some 42% believe the threat is \u201cincreasing rapidly.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Attack vectors<\/strong>: Email, SMS and Messaging Apps are the biggest channels for scammers; however, Dating App and QR code scams are more prominent in India than other parts of Asia. (Online dating scam victims: 14% vs. 7% ASEAN Average and QR Code scams: 18% vs. 10% ASEAN average).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>GSMA Open Gateway Hackathon: India Connected \u2013 APIs for a Billion Lives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>India\u2019s three largest mobile operators have also teamed up with Nokia and the GSMA, to an inaugural GSMA Open Gateway Hackathon at India Mobile Congress to accelerate development of new innovations and network API based services using network capabilities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The hackathon entitled\u00a0\u201cIndia Connected \u2013 APIs for a Billion Lives\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0has received more than 2,300 registrations and 400 ideas, or solution concepts, from developers, startups, and innovators with 100 finalists invited to attend and build\u00a0new API-powered solutions\u00a0to address real-world challenges across India\u2019s diverse landscape. Using\u00a0Open Gateway APIs, and Nokia\u2019s Network as Code platform, participants will create services that improve lives, unlock new revenue streams, and demonstrate the transformative potential of network intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to developing new services that prevent fraud, participants are invited to develop and showcase new innovations, using Nokia\u2019s Network as Code platform, that show how network API services can support financial inclusion, healthcare access, emergency services, agritech and rural connectivity, education and digital inclusion in India. Previous GSMA Open Gateway hackathons in Barcelona and China have led to the development of new services including\u00a0an application called, \u201cOn Time\u201d\u00a0that used location and population density APIs to analyse real-time passenger information, over-crowding and delays on Catalonia\u2019s public transport system. In Asia, China Telecom helped tackle digital exclusion by developing\u00a0TeleNavi, a voice-only intelligent location technology to help the elderly hail taxis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Julian Gorman, Head of Asia Pacific, GSMA, said:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cIndia is the world\u2019s second largest mobile market and home to a significant developer community. Mobile operator commitment to GSMA Open Gateway innovation can further accelerate India\u2019s digital transformation, creating secure, interoperable services that protect consumer trust and create new revenue opportunities. This week\u2019s hackathon and joint announcement are a symbol of collaboration that will collectively combat the scam economy.
