Worldwide shipments of AI PCs are projected to total 77.8 million units in 2025.\u201cAI PCs are reshaping the market, but their adoption in 2025 is slowing because of tariffs and pauses in PC buying caused by market uncertainty,\u201d said\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/experts\/ranjit-atwal\">Ranjit Atwal<\/a>, Sr Director Analyst at Gartner.<\/strong> \u201cNevertheless, users will invest in AI PCs to ensure they are prepared for the growing integration of AI at the edge.\u201dGartner analysts forecast AI PC shipments will total 143 million units and are projected to represent 55% of total PC market in 2026 (see Table 1). Their decision primarily revolves around the choice of AI PC processor platform. Gartner forecasts that Arm-based laptops will gain a larger share of the consumer market than the business market, as application compatibility challenges are overcome. In the business segment, users prefer x86 on Windows, which is expected to make\u00a0up\u00a071% of the AI business laptop market in 2025, with Arm making up 24%.<\/p>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"globalsite cmp-globalsite-datacallout aem-GridColumn aem-GridColumn--default--12\">\n<section class=\"grid-norm stack-28-top \">\n<div class=\"grid-norm-inner \">\n<div class=\"rte\">\n<p>&#8220;The future of AI PCs\u00a0is\u00a0in customization.&#8221;\u2013 Ranjit Atwal, Sr Director Analyst<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"globalsite cmp-globalsite-articletext aem-GridColumn aem-GridColumn--default--12\">\n<article class=\"article-text grid-norm margin-top-bottom mg-t16 rmg-b32\"><strong>Investments in AI Capabilities on PCs<\/strong>To\u00a0align with the wider availability of AI PCs, Gartner expects that by\u00a0end of 2026, 40% of\u00a0software vendors will prioritize investments in AI capabilities directly on PCs, up from 2% in 2024. In the same year,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2025-07-10-gartner-forecasts-worldwide-end-user-spending-on-generative-ai-models-to-total-us-dollars-14-billion-in-2025\">multiple small language models (SLMs<\/a>) will run locally on PCs, up from zero in 2023.SLMs are making it possible to run advanced AI features directly on PCs and devices overall, enabling faster response times, lower energy consumption and reduced reliance on cloud services. SLMs provide task-specific intelligence, and since AI runs directly on devices, SLMs help keep user and business data secure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Future of AI PCs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To unlock new growth, PC vendors must move beyond hardware and deliver software-defined, user-centric AI PCs designed for specific roles and use cases. \u201cThe future of AI PCs\u00a0is\u00a0in customization,\u201d said Atwal. \u201cIt\u00a0lets\u00a0users\u00a0configure their devices with the apps, features and functions they want.
