Analysis from\u00a0Omdia\u2019s new report\u00a0AI Regulation: Analysis of Global Policies and Regulatory Frameworks\u00a0reveals that governments and regulators worldwide are racing to address the rapidly evolving nature of AI technologies including generative AI, agentic AI, and sovereign AI systems.<\/p>\n

“The proliferation of AI is reshaping global regulatory frameworks faster than any previous technological wave,” said\u00a0Sarah McBride, Principal Analyst, Regulation<\/a>, at Omdia.<\/strong> “What’s particularly interesting is how policymakers are attempting to balance innovation with ethical considerations and sovereignty concerns.”<\/p>\n

Key highlights from the report include:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0EU Sets Global Benchmark: The European Union issued the world\u2019s first comprehensive AI regulatory framework, setting the benchmark for global standards. Since then, South Korea has issued the AI Basic Act.<\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0Strategic Government Investments: Nations are accelerating AI development through major funding initiatives, including the UK’s AI Opportunities Action Plan which has attracted \u00a314 billion ($17.6bn) in investment and the EU’s \u20ac20 billion ($21bn) funding dedicated to building AI gigafactories.<\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0Sector- and Activity-Specific Approaches: Several countries are looking at adopting targeted regulatory frameworks for different industries or use cases rather than implementing one-size-fits-all solutions.<\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0Ethical Frameworks Take Priority: Governments are increasingly focused on developing ethical guidelines to govern AI deployment and maintaining technological sovereignty for national security and data governance reasons. These evolving standards aim to build public trust to drive acceptance and use of AI technologies.<\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0Regulatory Harmonization: The report recommends governments align AI regulations with existing legal frameworks to avoid stifling innovation. A key challenge is the potential overlap and contention between direct AI regulations, such as the EU\u2019s AI Act, and broader legislative frameworks affecting digital markets.<\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0Seven Regulatory Challenges: Omdia\u2019s analysis identifies seven key regulatory challenges that policymakers must address to effectively govern AI technologies (Figure 1).\"Seven<\/a><\/p>\n

The report also emphasizes that companies are actively seeking clearer regulatory boundaries.<\/p>\n

“We’re seeing a noteworthy shift where businesses are now calling for regulatory guidance to provide them with clear operational parameters,” McBride noted.\u00a0“This collaborative approach between public and private sectors could potentially lead to more balanced and effective regulatory frameworks and represents a maturation in the industry’s approach to governance.”<\/p>\n
